At Graton Day Labor Center, we believe that safe working conditions are essential for high-quality, respectful, and efficient house cleaning services. Employers can help ensure a smooth and successful job by preparing a safe environment before workers arrive.

Employer Responsibilities: Creating a Safe Cleaning Workspace

To support worker safety during home cleaning jobs, employers should take the following steps:

Provide Necessary Cleaning Supplies and Equipment

Workers may arrive with basic protective items, but employers are responsible for providing job-specific cleaning supplies and tools, such as:

  • Vacuum, mop, broom, and buckets

  • Cleaning sprays or disinfectants

  • Sponges, rags, paper towels

  • Trash bags and recycling containers

If special products are required (such as eco-friendly or fragrance-free cleaners), please communicate this in advance.

Use Safe and Non-Toxic Products When Possible

Cleaning products can contain strong chemicals that may irritate the skin, lungs, or eyes. Employers are encouraged to provide:

  • Low-toxicity or eco-friendly cleaners

  • Proper ventilation when using strong disinfectants

  • Clear instructions for any specialty chemicals

Avoid mixing products such as bleach and ammonia, which can create dangerous fumes.

Maintain a Hazard-Free Home Environment

Before cleaning begins, please help reduce risks by:

  • Clearing clutter from walkways

  • Securing loose rugs or cords

  • Keeping pets safely in another room

  • Identifying any fragile or valuable items

A clear workspace helps prevent slips, falls, and accidents.

Plan Ahead for the Cleaning Job

Thinking through the job in advance helps everything go smoothly. Employers should consider:

  • Which rooms need the most attention

  • Any areas that are off-limits

  • Whether heavy lifting or moving furniture is expected

  • Where supplies, water, and trash disposal are located

Clear communication at the start of the job improves both safety and qualitySome cleaning tasks may require extra safety gear, including:

  • Rubber gloves for disinfecting and bathroom cleaning

  • Masks for dusty areas or strong odors

  • Knee pads for floor-level cleaning

  • Step stools or ladders for high surfaces (must be stable and safe)

Graton Day Labor Center is committed to ensuring that house cleaning jobs are performed in safe, fair, and dignified conditions for all workers.
