At Graton Day Labor Center, we are committed to safe, efficient, and high-quality digging and excavation work. Jobs involving trenches, drainage projects, or ground digging can present serious hazards if the site is not properly prepared.
Employer Responsibilities: Preparing a Safe Digging Worksite
To support worker safety and successful job completion, employers should take the following steps:
Provide Necessary Tools and Equipment
Workers may arrive with basic personal protective equipment, but employers are responsible for supplying any additional tools or safety equipment required for digging work.
This may include:
Shovels, picks, and digging tools
Wheelbarrows or hauling equipment
Protective gear needed for heavier excavation tasks
Having the right tools available helps prevent strain and improves job safety.
Locate Underground Utilities Before Digging
Before any trenching or digging begins, employers must confirm the location of all underground utility lines, including:
Electrical cables
Gas lines
Water pipes
Sewer or service connections
Utilities should be clearly marked or shut off if necessary. If you are unsure, contact 811 for a free utility locating service before starting the project.
Ensure Tools and Power Equipment Are Safe
If power tools or machinery will be used, employers should inspect all equipment ahead of time for:
Exposed or damaged wiring
Worn extension cords
Missing ground prongs
Dull or unsafe blades
Damaged equipment should never be used on site.
Additional Equipment That May Be Needed
Depending on the project, extra items may include:
Leather gloves for heavy-duty digging or tool handling
Wheelbarrows for safer and more efficient hauling of dirt, rocks, or debris
OSHA-Aligned Safety Practices:
Workers are trained to follow workplace safety standards, including:
Proper use of protective equipment
Ensuring tools and equipment are in good working condition
Using ergonomic techniques to prevent injury
Checking the work area for hazards such as unstable ground, open holes, or debris
Keeping pathways clear to reduce the risk of trips or falls
